N-Acetyl-cysteine Treats Hyperinsulinemia in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 08 - The antioxidant N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC)
has insulin-sensitizing properties in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
(PCOS), according to what is reportedly the first study of NAC for this
indication.]
More than half of patients with PCOS exhibit hyperinsulinemia, including up
to 40% of nonobese patients, Dr. Antonio Lanzone and colleagues note in the
June issue of Fertility and Sterility. Besides increasing the risk of
diabetes and related complications, hyperinsulinemia in PCOS may exacerbate
the excess androgen secretion, they say.
In a previous study, NAC increased cellular levels of the antioxidant
glutathione, which influences insulin receptor activity, according to the
researchers. At Universit Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, they tested
oral NAC in 37 women with PCOS, ages 19 to 33, for 5 to 6 weeks. Before and
after therapy, the patients underwent an oral glucose tolerance test,
assessment of insulin sensitivity by the euglycemic clamp technique, and
lipid and hormonal assays.
